Quiet Luxury

Charleston’s Nickel Hotel embodies effortless elegance

BY BLAIR KNOBEL

When it comes to boutique lodging, travelers to Charleston are spoiled for choice. Rich in artistry, hospitality, and distinctiveness, the Holy City’s hotels flourish like its secret gardens.

After opening The Pinch Hotel and its adjoining restaurant, Lowland, in 2023, Philadelphia-based hospitality group Method Co. seized an opportunity to expand the company’s luxury footprint with The Nickel, which opened last June. Perched in the 500 block of King Street, in the city’s dynamic Cannonborough neighborhood, The Nickel pays homage to Charleston’s European heritage by combining historical details with a modern approach.

Method Co. partnered with New York’s Morris Adjmi Architects to create the experience of a contemporary home rooted in the South. Leather, wood, and textiles complement a checkerboard marble floor in the lobby, with a soaring arched entrance to the elevator bay. Abstract art complements classic details, a reflection of Charleston’s continuous evolution. Much like the city’s French Quarter, the hotel incorporates intricate wrought-iron designs and a spacious interior courtyard.

Occupying the former Dixie Furniture building, The Nickel sits directly across from the old Morris Sokol furniture store, whose iconic sign—visible from most of the King Street–facing rooms—feels like a natural extension of the hotel’s design-forward aesthetic.

Amenities abound, but attention is understated. Each of its 50 rooms and suites includes a full kitchen with Bosch appliances, a washer and dryer, and a bar fit for hosting—with a stocked fridge should guests request it. The hotel can arrange for airport pick-up, bikes for exploring, or in-room massages. A stay at The Nickel is like having a studio apartment in Charleston with concierge service.

Rosemary Rose, the hotel’s rooftop bar and restaurant that is open to the public, offers a taste of the French Riviera, with stunning views and a Mediterranean-leaning menu. Bar Daniel, the hotel’s intimate second-floor bar for guests only, features cocktails and small plates. Adjacent to the bar is the hotel’s verdant courtyard, replete with a two-tiered fountain and fireplace. Coffee and tea service is available for guests at Bar Daniel, though each room includes these, should you crave a slow morning.

Method Co.’s brand of hospitality bridges exceptional design with quiet sophistication. The Nickel, whose name is inspired by the French phrase, C’est nickel—meaning “effortlessly polished”—is for the discerning traveler who values impeccable taste, curated amenities, and autonomous serenity. V
